Well into winter but no real prolonged harsh cold weather to drive the winter wildfowl south.
Brent Goose – Over 400 birds in our patch, probably more along the coast towards Lymington.
Shelduck – a dozen or so birds seen; less numbers than usual.
Wigeon – at least 180 in one flock near New Lane Bridge. A good record. The males are very handsome.
Teal – approx. 50 on Sturt Pond
Mallard – approx. 90 on Sturt Pond
Little Grebe – 4 on Sturt
Great Crested Grebe – 1 adult feeding in estuary mouth off North Point
Little Egret – at least 3 in area
Oystercatcher – approx. 25 in area
Knot – flock of approx 280 on mudflat at Hurst. A very good number.
Dunlin – 600+ mainly at Hurst
Snipe – 2 at Hurst
Greenshank – 2 feeding in Mount Lake
Common Gull – 4 in area
Great Black backed Gull – 2 in area.
So, some interesting species.
