A UNIQUE LOCATION
More than just a fortress
Step inside a wealth of history on a day trip to Hurst Castle, arguably one of the best days out in the New Forest.
Enjoy a fascinating day out for the whole family with lots of open spaces, different rooms, nooks and crannies to explore plus centuries of military history to discover.
Getting to the castle is part of the adventure, choose either a leisurely ferry ride which children will love (plus it’s a great chance to spot the abundance of wildlife), or work off some energy with a 2-mile walk along the shingle spit, which offers fantastic views.
The heart of Hurst Castle is the Tudor keep which retains much of its original 16th century appearance, head to the first floor where Charles I was held prisoner here in 1648. Travel though time to the west wing and don’t miss the garrison theatre, possibly the last theatre constructed by the garrison to survive from World War Two.
